A hack of ka1ikasan’s INTRUDER, by Stuart Langridge

You, the top spy for the Global Organisation for Secret Hijinks, have been sent to infiltrate the enemy's base. GOSH’s success depends on yours. Go to it, Agent!

This game is for anyone who finds themselves in a shopping mall or a shopping centre and wants to entertain themselves. While you're there, play this little game!

First, determine exactly what GOSH have sent you to do. Are you there to steal data or items, install bugs, or sabotage infrastructure? You’ll have multiple small targets rather than one big one.

In this game, you will try to achieve your goal by secretly interacting with various targets. In your fiction, targets are related to your goal and may be corporate servers, archives, security panels, etc. In real life, targets are represented by shops or other named public places in this shopping mall. You’ll need to infiltrate a number of these targets to complete your mission!

Targets

While in the shopping mall, you can scout the enemy base for your next target. To discover your next target, you need to generate a letter. Then, pick any shop or named public space in the shopping centre which contains that letter in its name, and that’s your next target.

Generating a letter

If this is the start of the game, then the first letter is the first letter of your own name. Otherwise, every interaction with a target generates a new letter, which tells you where to go next.

Interacting with a target

In the fiction, this represents you dealing with this target: hacking its computers, planting a bug, sabotaging or searching. In reality, to interact with a target shop, you must do the following:

  1. Enter the shop. You have to be inside it to infiltrate. (If you can’t get into your chosen shop for some reason, use your generated letter to pick another one.)
  2. Search. Find some sort of sign or lettering. This might be a label on some clothing, a hanging sign on a wall, the wording on the back of a board game for sale; anything that’s wording and is in the shop is fair game. Take the fourth letter from that wording. This represents you finding the target.
  3. Prepare. Find another sort of sign or lettering.
  4. Interact. Use your letter from Search to “index” into the letters from Prepare. This will give you your generated letter; use it to choose a new target! This represents you interacting: sabotaging some infrastructure, hacking the computer, planting a bug, etc.

/// FIELD DEMO ///

An example. Your generated letter is G, and you identify a target from that, a shop called “Bloggs Hardware”. Entering Bloggs’s, you see many hanging signs and choose one reading “Patio and Garden”. As per the Search step, take the fourth letter, which is I.

Next (Prepare), you find a lawnmower for sale in a box with instructions on the back: “This easy-to-handle, compact lawnmower...”

You use your Search letter, I, to index into those instructions as per the Interact step; I is the 9th letter, so you want letter 9 of those. (It’s easier to count A-B-C... letter-by-letter through the instructions until you get to I.) That gives you the T of “easy-To-handle”, so your generated letter is T.

And this is a succcessful infiltration! Bug planted, data stolen, machinery sabotaged: add it to your count.

Now you use T to find your next target; any shop with T in its name. And go infiltrate that!

Getting caught

If you infiltrate a target (shop) and you can’t find anything written to use, then you’re caught and the game is over.

If your generated letter is not in any shops in this shopping centre, then you’re caught and the game is over.

Success and escape

Once you have successfully infiltrated seven targets, your mission is complete! Glorious success to the forces of GOSH!

The Omega Variation

For agents who relish the extra challenge!

Instead of reaching seven successful infiltrations, you have to use the generated letters to spell out a word of your choice. Note that if you generate a letter which doesn’t fit the word, you still have to do that infiltration, but you can ignore the letter. So if you’re trying to spell out GOSH, you keep doing infiltrations in different shops until you get a G, then keep doing them until you get an O, and so on. GOSH High Command recommends that you pick a reasonably short word, here!
